How to blur part of an image
Drop your picture onto the box above. Drag across the area you want to hide and it's blurred straight away. Draw as many boxes as you need, use Undo last box if you slip, and press Download when you're done. Strength sets how strong the blur is, and you can switch to Pixelate or Black box at any time.
Pick Oval for the next box if the thing you're hiding is round, like a face.
What people hide in pictures
Faces of bystanders and children, number plates, house numbers and street signs, names and badges, addresses on parcels, account numbers and passwords on screenshots, and documents lying in the background of a photo. Hiding them before you post a picture protects other people's privacy as well as your own.
Blur, pixelate or black box?
Blur softens the area smoothly and looks the most natural. Pixelate turns it into a coarse mosaic, the familiar censor look. Black box covers it completely. Blur and mosaic are fine for faces and general details, but for text, numbers and anything where a mistake would matter, use the black box, because a blurred or pixelated area is not completely gone and weak settings can sometimes be partly reversed.
Questions people ask
How do I blur part of an image?
Drop the image onto the tool above and drag across the area you want to blur. Draw as many boxes as you like, then press Download.
Can I blur just one area and keep the rest sharp?
Yes. Only the boxes you draw are changed. Everything outside them stays exactly as it was.
Can I blur a face?
Yes. Switch the shape to Oval and drag over the face. The blur applies inside the oval only.
Is my picture uploaded to a server?
No. The picture is edited inside your browser tab, on your own device, and nothing is sent anywhere. That matters when the thing you're hiding is private.
Does the saved picture still contain location and camera data?
No. The saved copy is written fresh from the picture's pixels, so the EXIF data of the original, including any GPS location, isn't carried over. Only a standard colour profile is added.
Is blurring or pixelating safe for hiding text?
Not completely. Strong blurring and large mosaics make faces and text unreadable to people, but weak settings can sometimes be partly recovered, especially for text. For passwords, account numbers and other sensitive details, use the Black box option, which replaces the pixels entirely.
What file formats can I save?
PNG, JPG or WebP, chosen under the picture. PNG is lossless, JPG is smallest.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no limit, no watermark and no account. PhotoRiya is open source under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses.
