How to convert pixels to inches
Type the width and height of your picture in pixels and the DPI you want to print at. The calculator shows the printed size in inches, with the same size in centimetres, and updates as you type. Choose centimetres or millimetres from the unit menu if you prefer.
The formula is simple: inches = pixels ÷ DPI. A picture 3000 pixels wide printed at 300 DPI is 10 inches wide. To go the other way, pixels = inches × DPI, which the second calculator does for you.
Pixels needed for common print sizes
This chart shows the pixels a picture needs to fill each size without cropping, at three resolutions. 300 DPI is sharp photo quality, 150 DPI suits big prints seen from a distance, and 72 DPI is the old standard for screens.
| Print size | 300 DPI | 150 DPI | 72 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 6 in | 1200 × 1800 | 600 × 900 | 288 × 432 |
| 5 × 7 in | 1500 × 2100 | 750 × 1050 | 360 × 504 |
| 8 × 10 in | 2400 × 3000 | 1200 × 1500 | 576 × 720 |
| A5 | 1748 × 2480 | 874 × 1240 | 420 × 595 |
| A4 | 2480 × 3508 | 1240 × 1754 | 595 × 842 |
| US Letter | 2550 × 3300 | 1275 × 1650 | 612 × 792 |
| 11 × 14 in | 3300 × 4200 | 1650 × 2100 | 792 × 1008 |
| A3 | 3508 × 4961 | 1754 × 2480 | 842 × 1191 |
| 16 × 20 in | 4800 × 6000 | 2400 × 3000 | 1152 × 1440 |
| A2 | 4961 × 7016 | 2480 × 3508 | 1191 × 1684 |
| 24 × 36 in | 7200 × 10800 | 3600 × 5400 | 1728 × 2592 |
Pixels, inches and centimetres: the formulas
Inches to centimetres: multiply by 2.54. Centimetres to inches: divide by 2.54. Millimetres: divide by 25.4 to get inches. Pixels to centimetres: cm = pixels ÷ DPI × 2.54. Screens are measured in PPI instead of DPI, but the maths is identical. If you have a picture and want to see how big it can print, the image DPI checker reads its size from the file.
Questions people ask
How do I convert pixels to inches?
Divide the number of pixels by the DPI. For example, 1800 pixels at 300 DPI is 6 inches. The calculator above does it for width and height at once.
How many pixels is an inch?
It depends on the DPI. At 300 DPI an inch is 300 pixels, at 150 DPI it's 150 pixels, and at 72 DPI it's 72 pixels.
How many pixels do I need for an 8 × 10 print?
At 300 DPI you need 2400 × 3000 pixels, about 7.2 megapixels. At 150 DPI, 1200 × 1500 pixels is enough.
How do I convert pixels to centimetres?
Divide the pixels by the DPI to get inches, then multiply by 2.54. Or choose centimetres in the unit menu and the calculator does it for you.
What DPI should I use?
Use 300 DPI for sharp photo prints and 150 DPI for large prints viewed from a distance. Ask your printer if they have a specific requirement.
Is my picture uploaded to a server?
No. If you drop in a picture, only its size and DPI are read, inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Is the calculator free?
Yes. There is no limit and no account. PhotoRiya is open source under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses.
