How to make an Apple touch icon

Drop your logo or picture onto the box above. The 180 pixel icon is shown on the right of the preview as Apple 180 px. Choose how the picture fits, how much space it has and the background colour, then press Download all (ZIP). The file you need is apple-touch-icon.png.

Upload it to the root of your site and add this tag to your page head: <link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="180x180" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">. The ZIP has a file with the tag ready to copy.

How iOS treats the icon

iOS adds its own rounded corners, so the icon must be a plain full square. It also paints transparent pixels black, so this tool always fills the icon with your background colour, or white if you haven't chosen one. Because of that, the shape setting does not change the Apple icon, only the other icons in the set.

180 by 180 pixels is the size current iPhones use. iOS scales it for other devices, so a single file is enough.

Tips

Keep a margin of about 6 to 10 percent so the corner rounding doesn't clip your mark, and use a solid background that matches your brand. For the rest of the set, the ZIP includes favicon.ico, PNG sizes and Android icons, as in the favicon generator.

Questions people ask

What size is the Apple touch icon?

180 by 180 pixels for current iPhones and iPads.

Why is my Apple icon background black?

iOS paints transparent areas black. Give the icon a solid background, which this tool does for you, using white if you haven't chosen a colour.

Do I need to round the corners myself?

No. iOS rounds them. Supply a plain square.

Where do I put the file?

In the root of your site, as /apple-touch-icon.png, with the link tag in your page head. iOS also looks for that file name by itself if the tag is missing.

Is my picture uploaded to a server?

No. The icons are made inside your browser tab, on your own device, and nothing is sent anywhere. That also makes it instant, with no upload or queue.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no limit, no watermark and no account. PhotoRiya is open source under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses.
