How to convert a PNG to ICO

Drop your PNG onto the box above. A favicon.ico is made at once, with 16, 32 and 48 pixel icons inside, and you can see each at its real size. Press Download favicon.ico. Transparent areas of your PNG stay transparent.

If your PNG isn't square, choose Fit picture to keep all of it, or Crop to square to fill the icon. You can also add space around the picture, round the corners, or add a background colour.

About the ICO format

An ICO file is a small container holding several versions of one icon, so that Windows and browsers can pick the size they need. The icons inside this file are stored as PNG images, which Windows has read since Vista and every current browser reads. They keep full 32-bit colour with smooth transparency.

The sizes 16, 32 and 48 pixels cover browser tabs, bookmarks, the Windows taskbar and desktop shortcuts at normal scaling.

Need more than an ICO?

The same page makes the rest of a favicon set: PNG sizes, the Apple touch icon, Android icons, a manifest and the HTML tags. Press Download all (ZIP). For other conversions, see the image converter, and to change a picture's size first, use resize image.

Questions people ask

How do I convert PNG to ICO?

Drop your PNG onto the converter above and press Download favicon.ico.

Does the ICO keep transparency?

Yes. The icons inside are 32-bit PNG images, so transparent areas stay transparent.

What sizes are in the ICO?

16, 32 and 48 pixels. These are the sizes browsers and Windows use most.

My PNG isn't square. What happens?

Icons are square. Choose Fit to keep the whole picture with empty bands, or Crop to square to fill the icon from the centre of the picture.

What size PNG should I start with?

512 by 512 pixels or more gives the sharpest result. Small icons are made by shrinking, so a small start gives a soft result.

Is my picture uploaded to a server?

No. The icons are made inside your browser tab, on your own device, and nothing is sent anywhere. That also makes it instant, with no upload or queue.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no limit, no watermark and no account. PhotoRiya is open source under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses.
