How to convert a JPG to ICO

Drop your JPG onto the box above and a favicon.ico is made at once. JPG has no transparency, so a photo fills the whole icon. Choose Crop to square to fill the icon from the centre, pick Rounded or Circle if you want a shaped icon, and press Download favicon.ico.

The tool also reads PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF and more, so it works for any picture you have.

Making a good icon from a photo

Icons are tiny: 16 pixels is smaller than a thumbnail on a phone. Pick a photo with one clear subject, centered, with strong contrast. A close crop of a face or logo works better than a wide scene. Turning on a background colour and a few percent of space can make a mark stand out.

To remove the background from a logo so the icon is see-through, edit it in PhotoRiya first and save it as PNG, then use the PNG to ICO converter.

What you get

The favicon.ico file holds 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions. The ZIP, under Download all (ZIP), also holds PNG icons, the Apple touch icon, Android icons, a web manifest and the tags to paste into your page, which is the full favicon set.

Questions people ask

How do I convert a JPG to ICO?

Drop your JPG onto the converter above, choose how it fits the square, and press Download favicon.ico.

Can I make an icon from any image?

Yes. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF and other formats all work.

Will my icon have a transparent background?

Only if the picture has one. JPG files can't, so use the Circle or Rounded shape to make the corners transparent, or a PNG with a transparent background.

Why does my icon look blurry?

Icons are shown at 16 to 48 pixels, so small details disappear. Use a simple picture, crop it close, and start from a large image.

Is my picture uploaded to a server?

No. The icons are made inside your browser tab, on your own device, and nothing is sent anywhere. That also makes it instant, with no upload or queue.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no limit, no watermark and no account. PhotoRiya is open source under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses.
