How to resize an image

Drop your photo onto the box above. Under Pixels, type a new width or height and the other side follows to keep the proportions, or untick Keep the proportions to set both. Under Percent, enter how much of the original size you want, such as 50. The result updates at once, and you can press Download when it looks right.

The tool shows the new size and file size under the picture, so you can check it before saving.

Resampling quality

Resizing is done with a Lanczos filter, the same family of filters editors use for their best-quality resize. When shrinking, every source pixel contributes to the result, so fine detail stays clean instead of turning jagged. When enlarging, the filter gives smooth edges, though no filter can add detail that was never in the photo.

Sizes can go up to 16,384 pixels on a side and 120 megapixels in all, which is the limit of what a browser tab can handle.

Common sizes and tips

For a web page, 1,200 to 2,000 pixels on the long side is usually plenty. For a social post, check the platform's recommended size. For print, work out the pixels from the inches and the resolution: the pixels to inches calculator and the DPI checker help. To hit a file size instead of a pixel size, use the compress image to 100KB tool.

Questions people ask

How do I resize an image?

Drop your photo onto the tool above, then type a new width or height in pixels, or a percentage. Press Download when it looks right.

How do I resize without losing quality?

Shrinking a photo keeps it sharp with a good filter, and this tool uses one. Enlarging a photo can't add detail, so keep enlargement modest. Save as PNG for no further loss.

How do I keep the proportions?

Leave Keep the proportions ticked. When you change the width, the height follows, and the other way round.

What is the biggest size I can make?

16,384 pixels on a side and 120 megapixels in total, which is as much as a browser tab can handle.

Can I make the file smaller as well?

Yes. Smaller dimensions give a smaller file, and with JPG you can also lower the quality or set a file size limit.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The resizing and compressing happen inside your browser tab, on your own device, and nothing is sent anywhere. That also makes it instant, with no upload or queue.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no limit, no watermark and no account. PhotoRiya is open source under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses.
