About EXR files
OpenEXR is a high-dynamic-range format used for renders, visual effects and compositing. It stores light as floating-point numbers that go far beyond what a screen can show: white in an EXR is just 1.0, and bright lights can be 10, 100 or more.
A normal picture format like PNG can't hold those values, so converting an EXR means choosing how to bring them into range. That is what the two controls do.
Exposure and highlights
Exposure brightens or darkens the picture in stops before conversion: +1 doubles the light. Use it to bring a dark render into a visible range.
Compress highlights rolls bright values off smoothly, so lights keep some detail instead of turning flat white. Cut off highlights simply clips everything above white, which is what a plain conversion does. The linear light values are then converted to sRGB for display.
What it reads
RGB, RGBA and grayscale EXR files, with the common lossless compressions used by renderers. Alpha is kept in PNG and WebP. Very large EXRs, over about 30 megapixels, are too big for a browser tab.
Questions people ask
How do I convert EXR to PNG?
Drop your EXR file onto the converter above, adjust the exposure if the picture looks too dark or too bright, then press Download PNG.
Why does my EXR look dark or washed out?
EXR stores linear light, which looks dark if shown as it is. The converter applies the sRGB curve for you, and the Exposure slider lets you brighten or darken the result.
What does Compress highlights do?
It maps very bright values smoothly into the range a PNG can hold, instead of clipping them to white, so highlights keep some detail.
Does it keep the alpha channel?
Yes, in PNG and WebP. JPG can't hold transparency.
Can I convert an EXR to JPG instead?
Yes. Choose JPG under the picture, set the quality, and download.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, on your own device, and the result is handed straight back to you. Nothing is sent anywhere, so it is safe for client work and private pictures.
What is the largest file I can convert?
Files up to 400 MB and about 120 megapixels. A browser tab has limited memory, so very large pictures work best on a computer rather than a phone.
Is this converter really free?
Yes. There is no limit, no watermark and no account. PhotoRiya is open source under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses.
