About TGA files

TGA, or Targa, is an old but still common format in game development, 3D rendering and video. Game engines often use it for textures and sprites because it's simple and supports an alpha channel. Most web browsers and many everyday apps can't show it.

Converting a TGA to PNG gives you a file every program opens, with the same pixels and the same transparency.

What's supported

Uncompressed and RLE-compressed TGA files, with or without an alpha channel. If the TGA has transparency, the PNG and the WebP keep it; a JPG can't, so see-through areas turn white.

Why PNG?

PNG is lossless, so nothing is lost converting from TGA. It also keeps transparency, which matters for textures, sprites and cut-out graphics.

Questions people ask

How do I convert a TGA file to PNG?

Drop the TGA onto the converter above. PNG is selected for you, so press Download PNG.

Does the PNG keep the TGA's alpha channel?

Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels stay as they are in PNG and WebP.

Does it support RLE-compressed TGA?

Yes, both uncompressed and RLE-compressed TGA files are read.

Why can't my computer open a TGA file?

TGA is a specialist format used mostly in games and 3D work, so many everyday apps and browsers don't include support for it.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, on your own device, and the result is handed straight back to you. Nothing is sent anywhere, so it is safe for client work and private pictures.

What is the largest file I can convert?

Files up to 400 MB and about 120 megapixels. A browser tab has limited memory, so very large pictures work best on a computer rather than a phone.

Is this converter really free?

Yes. There is no limit, no watermark and no account. PhotoRiya is open source under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses.
