How to convert WebP files

  1. Add your file

Drag it onto the box above, or tap Choose a file and pick it from your device.

  2. Choose the result

The converted picture appears at once. Switch between PNG, JPG and WebP, and adjust the quality or exposure where they apply, without loading the file again.

  3. Download

Press Download. The file is saved with the original name and the new extension.

Why convert WebP to PNG?

WebP is a modern web format from Google. Browsers handle it well, but many editors, print services, older apps and some upload forms still don't accept it. PNG is accepted nearly everywhere, so converting WebP to PNG is the usual fix when a program says the file isn't supported.

PNG is lossless, so a PNG made from a WebP contains exactly the pixels of the WebP, with nothing lost in the conversion. If the WebP had transparency, the PNG keeps it.

Lossy and lossless WebP

WebP files can be lossy, like JPG, or lossless, like PNG. The converter decodes both. Converting a lossy WebP to PNG gives a larger file with the same picture, but it can't restore detail that lossy compression already removed.

You can also save as JPG for a smaller file, or as lossless WebP.

Colour and transparency

Embedded colour profiles are converted to sRGB. Transparent areas stay transparent in PNG and WebP, and turn white in JPG.

Questions people ask

How do I convert WebP to PNG?

Drop your WebP file onto the converter above. PNG is selected for you, so just press Download PNG.

Does the PNG keep the WebP's transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas of the WebP stay transparent in the PNG.

Is converting WebP to PNG lossless?

The conversion itself loses nothing: the PNG holds exactly the decoded pixels. A lossy WebP has already lost detail, which can't be restored.

Why won't my program open a WebP file?

WebP is newer than JPG and PNG, and many older editors and services don't support it yet. Converting to PNG or JPG solves that.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, on your own device, and the result is handed straight back to you. Nothing is sent anywhere, so it is safe for client work and private pictures.

What is the largest file I can convert?

Files up to 400 MB and about 120 megapixels. A browser tab has limited memory, so very large pictures work best on a computer rather than a phone.

Is this converter really free?

Yes. There is no limit, no watermark and no account. PhotoRiya is open source under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses.
