About TIFF files

TIFF is a flexible, mostly lossless format used by scanners, cameras, print workflows and archives. It can hold 8 or 16 bits per channel, transparency, RGB, grayscale or CMYK colour, and several kinds of compression. That flexibility makes TIFF files large and hard to share, which is why people convert them to JPG.

This converter reads uncompressed TIFF and the common compressions (LZW, ZIP and PackBits).

What happens to 16-bit and CMYK TIFFs

A 16-bit TIFF is reduced to 8 bits per channel, because JPG only holds 8. CMYK TIFFs, which are made for print, are converted to RGB through the profile embedded in the file, or a standard coated-paper profile if there is none, so they don't turn out dull or inverted. If you need to go from RGB to CMYK instead, use the RGB to CMYK converter.

For a multi-page TIFF, the first page is converted.

JPG, PNG or WebP?

Choose JPG for photographs and small files. Choose PNG or WebP if the TIFF has transparency or you want no quality loss. The quality slider for JPG trades file size for detail.

Questions people ask

How do I convert a TIFF to JPG?

Drop the TIFF onto the converter above and choose JPG, which is selected for you. Adjust the quality slider if you like, then press Download JPG.

Will converting a TIFF to JPG reduce quality?

JPG is a lossy format, so some detail is discarded, but at high quality the difference is usually invisible. Keep your original TIFF if you may edit the picture again.

Does it convert CMYK TIFF files?

Yes. CMYK TIFFs are converted to RGB using their embedded colour profile, or a standard coated CMYK profile if there isn't one.

What happens to a 16-bit TIFF?

It is converted to 8 bits per channel, which is what JPG, and most PNG and WebP files, use.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, on your own device, and the result is handed straight back to you. Nothing is sent anywhere, so it is safe for client work and private pictures.

What is the largest file I can convert?

Files up to 400 MB and about 120 megapixels. A browser tab has limited memory, so very large pictures work best on a computer rather than a phone.

Is this converter really free?

Yes. There is no limit, no watermark and no account. PhotoRiya is open source under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses.
