How to learn shortcuts faster

  • Learn one group at a time. Start with tools (single letters), then selections, then layers.
  • Press a tool's letter again to cycle. Several tools share a key, for example M switches between the rectangular and elliptical marquee.
  • Hold Space for the Hand tool while painting or selecting, so you never leave the tool you're using to move around.
  • Use the number keys for opacity. 5 sets 50%, and typing two digits quickly, like 4 then 5, sets 45%.
  • Search the menus. When you can't remember a shortcut, Ctrl+K (⌘K) opens command search in PhotoRiya.

Windows and Mac keys

Photoshop uses the same shortcuts on both systems with different key names. The tables show both. In short: Ctrl on Windows is Command (⌘) on a Mac, Alt is Option (⌥), Shift is ⇧ and Backspace is Delete (⌫). The switch at the top of the page hides the column you don't need.
