How to extract layers from a PSD

  1. Open your PSD

Drag a .psd or .psb file onto the box above, or tap Choose PSD file. The tool lists every layer and group with its type and size. Use Preview to look at any single layer.

  2. Choose the layers

Layers with pixels are ticked for you. Untick what you don't need, or press Select none and tick only a few. Pick Trim to layer for small files or Full canvas size to keep every layer in position.

  3. Download the ZIP

Press Create ZIP. When it's ready, a Download ZIP button appears. Inside you'll find one PNG per layer, in folders that match your groups.

What people use it for

  • Web and app design: pull logos, icons, buttons and photos out of a design file to use in code.
  • Game art and sprites: export each part of a character or UI screen as its own transparent image.
  • Handing off to someone without Photoshop: send a ZIP of assets instead of a file they can't open.
  • Rescuing a part of an old design: grab one layer from a PSD without opening a heavy desktop program.

How each layer is rendered

The PSD is opened with the same engine as the PhotoRiya editor. To make a layer's PNG, that layer is drawn on its own over a transparent background, with its mask, opacity and layer styles applied. Colours keep the document's profile, and CMYK files are converted to sRGB, because PNG can't hold CMYK.

A layer on its own can't know about the layers around it, so a few things look different from the finished composite: a layer that is clipped to the one below is exported with all its pixels, blend modes such as Multiply have nothing to blend with, and effects applied to a whole group don't reach the layers inside it. If you need the finished picture, use the PSD to PNG converter.

Questions people ask

How do I extract layers from a PSD without Photoshop?

Drop your .psd file onto the tool above. Every layer and group is listed, with the ones that have pixels already ticked. Choose what you need, press Create ZIP, then Download ZIP. Each layer is saved as its own transparent PNG, and groups become folders in the ZIP.

Is my PSD uploaded to a server?

No. The PSD is read and every layer is rendered inside your browser tab, on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere, so it is safe for client work and unreleased designs.

Do the PNGs keep transparency?

Yes. Each layer is exported over a transparent background with its own opacity, so it drops straight into a web page, a game engine or another design.

Are layer masks and effects included?

Yes. A layer is exported the way it looks on its own: its layer mask, vector mask, opacity and layer styles (drop shadow, stroke, glow and the rest) are applied. What can't be reproduced for a single layer is anything that depends on the layers around it, such as clipping masks and blend modes against the layers below.

What does "Trim to layer" or "Full canvas size" mean?

Trim to layer crops each PNG to the pixels of that layer (plus its shadow or glow), which gives small files. Full canvas size makes every PNG as big as the whole document with the layer in its original position, so you can stack them back on top of each other in another program.

What happens to groups and hidden layers?

Groups become folders in the ZIP. You can also tick a group to export it as one merged image. Layers that are switched off in the PSD are marked hidden and are included by default; untick Include layers hidden in the PSD to leave them out.

Why does a layer say "no pixels"?

Adjustment layers (Levels, Curves, Hue/Saturation and so on) change the layers beneath them and don't contain a picture of their own, and some layers are empty. They are listed but can't be exported.

Can I export text layers, shapes and smart objects?

Yes, they are exported as pictures of how they look. The text is no longer editable in a PNG. To change the words, open the PSD in PhotoRiya and edit the text layer.

How big a PSD can it open?

Files up to 400 MB, about 120 megapixels and 3,000 layers. A browser tab has limited memory, so very large files work best on a computer.

Can I get a single flattened image instead of layers?

Yes. The PSD to PNG converter turns the whole design into one PNG, JPG or WebP.
