What is a PSB file?

PSB is Photoshop's Large Document Format. It is the same as PSD in every way that matters for a picture, with layers, masks, text and effects, but it uses 64-bit sizes so a document can be much larger than a PSD allows: up to 300,000 pixels on a side, and files of many gigabytes. Photographers who stitch giant panoramas and artists who paint huge canvases end up with PSB files.

Because it's rare, most viewers can't open it. This converter reads the PSB, uses the full-size preview Photoshop saved inside when it has one and draws the layers itself when it doesn't, and gives you a normal picture.

Size limits

PSB files are often huge, and a browser tab can only use so much memory. This converter handles files up to 400 MB and about 120 megapixels. For anything bigger, convert on a computer with a lot of memory, or use a desktop editor. For ordinary PSD files, use the PSD to PNG converter.

Questions people ask

What is a PSB file?

PSB stands for Photoshop Big, also called the Large Document Format. It works like a PSD but allows images over 30,000 pixels on a side and files over 2 GB.

How do I convert a PSB to PNG?

Drop your .psb file onto the converter above. PNG is selected for you, so press Download PNG. You can switch to JPG or WebP at any time.

Why can't I open a PSB file in other programs?

PSB is a specialist variant of PSD that many viewers and editors don't support. This converter reads it directly in your browser.

Is there a size limit for PSB files?

Files up to 400 MB and about 120 megapixels. A PSB larger than that, which can be many gigabytes, doesn't fit in a browser tab's memory.

Do I get the layers?

The converter gives you the finished, merged picture. To get every layer as its own image, use the PSD layer extractor, or open the file in PhotoRiya.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, on your own device, and the result is handed straight back to you. Nothing is sent anywhere, so it is safe for client work and private pictures.

Is this converter really free?

Yes. There is no limit, no watermark and no account. PhotoRiya is open source under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses.
